Artist's Statement :

At the centre of my work lies my hometown, Santiniketan in its changing seasons through the years. My work is an ongoing documentation of how the climate and landscape of Santiniketan has been changing throughout my lifetime, triggered by the urbanization of the university town. This ongoing documentation manifests itself in the form of poetry and subsequently, images. Having been brought up in this town, my work investigates something that is so familiar to me and yet has gone through countless stages of transformation.
Writing plays an important role in my way of documenting this town. Haiku, for me, is the perfect tool for this because of its rules and limitations, since it follows a 5-7-5 pattern of phrases. It also has a seasonal reference. So, in a way they work as field notes for the purpose of noting down my observations. These little poems generate an abstract image, and reading them in retrospect prompt a new set of visuals, reflecting the constant state of flux that our surroundings are in. My pen and ink works seek to highlight the otherwise downplayed anxieties that come with changes that are not always welcome. And these changes in question sometimes take 10 years or as little as one month to show. I draw inspiration from personal documentation and experiences, and recollections of people who have lived here and those who continue to stay in this town for varying stretches of time.
