Artist's Statement :

The self-reflection in my work is a process to understand my most honest state of being. The action of making a self-portrait every day has resulted in the idea of a place for self-reflection. Looking at yourself, over and over again as you become “absurd”. I dream of a world that originates from the life force of flowers and only has me as an individual in it. A mood-scape where there is nothing to do but sit alone and be. Where you are so alone that you talk to yourself through flowers.

My works originated from the simple pleasure of creation and now have become a journey through my persona. A flower is like an entire world in itself. I have been around flowers since I was born, especially chrysanthemums. My family told me about how our farm used to be filled with chrysanthemums. I feel that even though the memory is lost because I cannot remember my childhood; the flower has still affected me and this feeling towards flowers has comforted me.This feels like, unknowingly, I as a human always want to be around comfort, and I define comfort as the first few years of my life. I have portrayed natural forms and objects concentrated together to create a pattern-like chaotic-calm effect to show that nature, however chaotic it may be, still brings back the calm, at least in me.

Self-portraits are a very significant part of my years of development as an artist. The complexity of a self-portrait and its mood resembles the flowering chrysanthemum. It makes me feel like I’m simply trying to imitate life’s vigour on canvases. There are a lot of mediums that could portray my ideas, but oil paints on canvas truly bring my vision to life. My sources of inspiration involve flowers around me, my mirror and my art. Art expresses my emotions, but is art the only way to express emotions?
